ABB’s flagship Distributed Control System (DCS), System 800xA has received ISASecure® System Security Assurance (SSA™) Level 1 certification for cyber security.
System 800xA is secure by design, by default and in deployment making it a market leader for the continuous protection of critical infrastructure
Designed to minimize cyber security risks, ABB helps customers take maximum advantage of technological advances while preserving the availability and functional operability of automation systems
Sitting at the heart of energy and process industries, the new generation of increasingly flexible control systems now utilize open standards and extended communication protocols as well as enabling connectivity to external networks, and cloud solutions. These technological changes have brought huge operational benefits but at the same time they have also introduced cyber security concerns predominantly in office or enterprise IT systems. This means that it is essential for the DCS to have the capability to minimize security risks.
The certificate issued to ABB’s System 800xA 6.1.1, by exida, an independent assessment organization, provides validation of its cyber security solutions. The recently awarded ISASecure certification is based on the automation industry’s leading standard - ISA/IEC62443* designed to help energy and process industries deal with dynamic cyber environments.
“When coping with the rapid advances in today’s technology, customers need the assurance that their DCS will play a central role in the protection of their assets“ said Peter Ahstrom, Global Product Manager for System 800xA. “This new certification demonstrates that ABB’s System 800xA 6.1.1 is equipped with the right security functionality to protect the end user's production asset while introducing the latest technology advances"
The system level (SSA) certification is in addition to component certifications (CSA) already obtained for System 800xA’s AC 800M controller portfolio. To achieve this, ABB also demonstrated that its product development organization meets the expectations for maintaining a secure development life-cycle (SDLA).
“This certification provides ABB’s customers with assurance that this product meets the technical security requirements for Industrial Automation Control Systems (IACS) as defined in the internationally recognized ISA/IEC 62443-3-3 and ISA/IEC 62443-4-1 standards” says Andre Ristaino, Managing Director, ISASecure Program.
